
Doug Nordman served for 20 years of active duty in the U.S. Navy’s submarine force and retired in 2002 at the age of 41. He and his spouse, a retired Navy Reservist, reached financial independence in 1999 on a high savings rate.
Carol Pittner was born & raised in Hawaii, and joined the Navy on a ROTC scholarship. She’s been stationed around the world on a destroyer and an aircraft carrier before moving to the Reserves. She and her active-duty spouse are rapidly approaching financial independence on a high savings rate.
Carol and Doug's Vroom Veer Stories
- Doug was born in Pittsburgh, got to Hawaii as soon as possible in the Navy
- Carol was born and raised in Hawaii, did her K-12 in Hawaii
- Doug retired when Carol was in 5th grade, she didn't have go to the before/after soon programs; Dad was home now
- Being retired can include some feelings of isolation; you need a plan to have social support; don't use this as an excuse to stay in a job that you don't like, you can work through this issue
- Feeling a need to contribute something to your family and to the world is normal; finding out what that will look like can cause some fear; done right it can be lots of fun
